Erewan Shrine, Bangkok

I saw the news late last night about the bombing of the Erewan Shrine in Bangkok and sighed. I've been there 4-5 times over the last 25 years and it's got the odd distinction of being a very peaceful place despite the crowds and noise all around. It's built on the corner of one of the busiest roads in central Bangkok and is always busy.

At the centre of the shrine sits Lord Brahma, the Hindu creator god, surrounded by flowers (mainly marigolds and orchids) and incense drowning out the smell of car exhaust fumes. Bells are rung and dancers perform on the hour in praise to Lord Brahma. And someone deliberately bombed it and killed people. Bad karma.

I hope Bangkok rebuilds it and Lord Brahma forgives.
